Baggage Allowance
1 What is my allowance for checked baggage?

Weight concept

Weight allowances for checked baggage are as follows:

Business Class, 30 kg (66 lb)
Economy Class, 20 kg (44 lb)

Occupational safety rules require that the checked baggage weight for passengers travelling to/from Australia, Brunei, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom does not exceed 32 kg (70 lb) per piece. Any bags weighing more than 32 kg (70 lb) must be broken down such that each piece weighs less than 32 kg (70 lb).

Passengers are required to re-pack their baggage if the baggage weight exceeds the above-stipulated limitation per piece. It should be noted that this 'physical' baggage weight limitation is an issue relating to Occupational Health Safety and is not related to baggage allowance and charges, which is a separate subject matter. Passengers with excess baggage beyond their checked baggage allowance will be levied with excess baggage charges.

Solitaire PPS and PPS members are entitled to double the free baggage allowance for the respective class of travel. KrisFlyer Gold members are entitled to an additional 20 kg (44 lb) of free baggage for the respective class of travel.

Infants are entitled to 10 kg of checked baggage plus either one fully collapsible stroller/pushchair or  carrycot or Infant's car seat. Infant food may be carried as hand-luggage for the infant's consumption on board.

A 10 kg excess baggage allowance is extended for customers with diving equipment travelling to Cebu, Davao, Langkawi, Lombok, Phuket and Manado.

Piece concept (only applicable for travel to USA/Canada regions)

Business Class
· Two pieces of baggage may be checked.
· The sum of the greatest outside linear dimensions of each bag cannot exceed 158 cm (62 in).
· The weight of each piece is limited to 23 kg (50 lb).

Economy Class
· Two pieces of baggage may be checked.
· The sum of the greatest outside linear dimensions of the two pieces measured together does not
exceed 273 cm (106 in), provided that the outside linear dimensions of each bag do not exceed 158 cm (62 in).
· The weight of each piece is limited to 23 kg (50 lb).
· PPS and KrisFlyer Gold members are allowed one extra bag.

Infants are entitled to 10 kg of checked baggage plus either one fully collapsible stroller/pushchair or  carrycot or Infant's car seat. Infant food may be carried as hand-luggage for the infant's consumption on board.

Note: customers travelling to/from USA/Canada regions on the same ticket will have these baggage allowances applied at all points in the itinerary. Excess baggage will continue to be levied on a per-piece basis.

Over and above the free baggage allowance, the following items are allowed to be carried in the cabin of the aircraft, free of charge:
1. A lady's handbag, pocketbook or purse.
2. An overcoat, wrap or blanket.
3. A fully collapsible invalid's wheelchair, and/or pair of crutches, provided that the customer is dependent upon them.

3 How are excess baggage charges levied?

Excess baggage charges apply when you travel with baggage in excess of the free allowance you are entitled to (see points 1 & 2).

From 1 April 2008, SilkAir and Singapore Airlines will adopt a zonal matrix to calculate extra baggage charges.

Until 31 March 2008, excess baggage charges per kilogram were based on a flat 1.5 percent of the highest one-way published Economy fare, from point of departure to your point of arrival.

The zonal matrix ensures that you will be able to establish ahead of arriving at airport check-in, the extra cost you would incur if you wish to travel with more baggage than your checked allowance. Charges will depend on the region you are departing from, and disembarking on.

4 How am I charged for excess baggage if I transit/interline to another flight?

Transit Stopovers
From 1 April 2008, if your travel includes making a transit stopover, excess baggage charges will be based on the originating and the disembarking region.

For example, the excess baggage charges for a passenger traveling from Phuket (Band 1) to Surabaya (Band 1), with a transit in Singapore, are as follows:

Before 1 April 2008: SGD 17 per kg
Charges are based on the flat rate of 1.5 percent of the Phuket-Singapore published fare (SGD 10) and Singapore-Surabaya (published fare SGD 7). For example, if your total baggage weight is deemed to have exceeded your checked allowance by 11 kg excess baggage charges of SGD 187 (SGD 17 per kg x 11 kg) would apply.

From 1 April 2008: SGD 10 per kg
Under the zonal system, excess baggage charges of SGD 110 (SGD 10 per kg x 11 kg) would apply in the above scenario.

Interline Travel
From 1 April 2008, if your itinerary includes interline travel on an interline partner carrier, excess baggage charges will be based on the originating and the disembarking region.

For example, the excess baggage charges for a SilkAir passenger traveling from Surabaya (Band 1) to London (Band 4) on SilkAir/SingaporeAirlines and from London to Oslo (Band 4) on an interline partner carrier are as follows:

Before 1 April 2008: SGD 68 per kg
This is calculated as 1.5 percent of the published through fare for Surabaya to Oslo (SGD 4470). If your total baggage weight is deemed to have exceeded your checked allowance by 8 kg for example, the excess baggage charges of SGD 544 (SGD 68 per kg x 8 kg) would apply.

From 1 April 2008: SGD 70 per kg
Under the zonal system, the excess baggage charges of SGD 560 (SGD 70 per kg x 8 kg) would apply in the above scenario.
